Set a password and Bindery encrypts the document itself, the standard PDF way — the file refuses to open in any viewer without it. This is real protection applied locally, not a decorative lock.
There is no recovery if the password is lost, because nobody else ever has it — including Bindery. Bindery runs entirely in your browser — your file is never uploaded, so there is nothing to delete from a server afterwards.

Two kinds of protection
A PDF can be protected in two ways, and Bindery offers both. A password to open encrypts the document so that no viewer can display it without the password — the right choice for statements, medical records and anything sent by email. Restrictions only leaves the file readable by anyone but sets an owner password with permissions: printing allowed or not, copying text allowed or not, editing allowed or not. Restrictions are honoured by well-behaved viewers and are useful for review copies; they are not a substitute for encryption, because the file itself is readable.
Choosing a password that works
- Send the password by a different channel than the file — a message, a call, in person — so a copied email does not contain both.
- Long beats clever: a sentence you can say on the phone is better than a symbol soup.
- There is no recovery. The password never leaves your device, so nobody — including Bindery — can open the file without it. Store it where you store passwords.
- For a recipient who should open the file without a password but only for a while, a sealed link with an expiry is the better tool.

Encryption should be the final step: most tools cannot operate on an encrypted file without the password. Fill, sign, flatten, compress and clean metadata first, then protect. To remove a password you know later, Unlock does the reverse on the device.

What kind of protection is this?

Can Bindery recover a lost password?
No — and that is the point. The password never leaves your device, so no one, including Bindery, can unlock the file without it.
Is my file uploaded for encryption?
No. Encryption is applied in your browser before the file ever touches a network.
Can the recipient open the file on a phone?

Can I protect a PDF without a password, only restricting printing?
