When merging is the right tool
Merging keeps every source file intact and stacks them in the order you choose. It is the right move for a cover letter plus a CV, a contract plus its signed annexes, monthly invoices into one quarterly file, or a stack of scans that belong together. If you need to interleave pages from several documents, or drop individual pages along the way, use Mix pages instead — it opens every page of every file on one board.
- Applications and submissions: portals often accept one attachment. Put the form first, the supporting documents after it, and check the page count before you upload it to the portal.
- Contracts: merge the signed agreement with its schedules, then flatten if the parts contain form fields that should no longer change.
- Scans: phone scanners produce one PDF per session; merging them and then running Compress keeps the combined file mailable.
What carries over, and what to check
Pages are copied byte-for-byte: text stays selectable, images keep their resolution, and vector drawings stay sharp, because nothing is re-rendered. Page sizes are preserved as they are, so a Letter document merged with an A4 one produces a file with two page sizes — run Resize afterwards if the result must be uniform. Turn on the bookmarks option and each source file becomes an entry in the bookmark sidebar of any PDF viewer, which is the fastest way for a reader to jump between the parts of a long bundle.
Two things deserve a look before you send the result. Interactive form fields are best flattened before merging so the answers cannot shift. And a merged file carries the metadata of the document it was built from — open Remove metadata if the title or author should not travel with it.

Tips for a clean combined document
- Name the output before you merge — the field is on the board — so the download does not arrive as “merged.pdf”.
- Merging a file that is already large? Compress the parts first; compression works per image and gives the same result either way, but a smaller input keeps the board responsive.
- Need only some pages from one of the sources? Extract them first, then merge the extract.
- Photos and scans as images? JPG to PDF turns them into a PDF you can merge, or use the merge PDFs and images path.
- The original files are never modified. If the order is wrong, run it again.
Questions people ask
Is there a file size or page limit?
There is no page-count cap; your device’s memory is the practical limit. Free covers files up to 25 MB and 3 completed jobs a day; Pro removes both caps, and files over 200 MB stream through Split and Extract.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The merge runs in your browser using local processing. Your files never leave your device, and Bindery has no server copy to store or delete.
Does merging change the quality of my PDFs?
No. Pages are copied into the new document unchanged — text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution.
Can I merge PDFs of different page sizes?
Yes. Every page keeps its own size and orientation in the merged file. If the result must be uniform — for printing or a submission that specifies A4 or Letter — run the Resize tool on the merged PDF afterwards.
Does the merged PDF get bookmarks?
If you turn the bookmarks option on, each source file becomes a bookmark in the sidebar of any PDF viewer, named after the file. Leave it off for a plain combined document.
How many files can I merge at once?
