Separator sheets make the job easy. One-sided documents are best scanned single-sided, with a blank sheet slipped between documents (the scanner’s blank-page removal would also delete your separator sheets), because every blank page counts as a cut: a duplex scan of one-sided paper puts a blank back after every sheet, and each one becomes a cut unless the next page says page 2 of N or later or begins “continued”. Two-sided documents can be scanned duplex. Either way, blank pages are greyed out and left out of the documents, a click keeps one, and a run of blanks gives a single cut, so one click joins across it. You get a ZIP of named PDFs with an index, or one PDF with a bookmark per document. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Scan the whole pile into one PDF, with a blank sheet between documents if you can
  2. Drop the PDF here and check the cuts Unstack proposes between the thumbnails
  3. Download a ZIP of named PDFs with the index, or one PDF with a bookmark per document

Questions people ask

Do I need separator sheets?

No, but they help. Without them Unstack relies on page numbers, labelled numbers and dates, letterheads and headers, which are plentiful on invoices and statements and scarce on plain letters and handwritten notes. A blank sheet between documents is the clearest evidence there is, and it is left out of the documents automatically. Any blank sheet works; there is nothing to print.

Should I scan single-sided or duplex?

Scan two-sided documents duplex. For a pile of one-sided documents, scan single-sided: a duplex scan gives every sheet a blank back, and a blank page counts as a cut unless the next page says page 2 of N or later or begins “continued”, so a one-sided letter with no page numbers would be cut at every sheet. Each of those cuts is one click to remove.

Does it change the quality of my scans?

No. The scanned pages are copied into the documents, not re-rendered, so they keep the resolution and colour they were scanned at. Compression and a searchable text layer are offered when you download, and both are optional; the text layer counts against the 5 free OCR pages a day. On the free plan each page also carries the small “Made with Bindery” line.
