Share less hides by default. In the transaction table, anything not explicitly shown is boxed; outside it, totals such as “Total paid out” are boxed, and account and card numbers, and sort codes labelled as such, are masked to their last four digits. Each printed running balance is checked against the transactions before it, and when they do not add up, or the statement prints no running balance, Bindery boxes more, not less: every line with an amount and everything between them, with the reasons listed, and the redaction asks you to confirm you checked every page. It works on digital (text) statements; a scanned statement needs OCR first. A page without text gets no boxes from Share less: it is listed, so make it searchable with OCR first or box it yourself. After the redaction, Leak Check runs on the result and the done screen says what it found, and the redaction log records what was shown and hidden. Recipients may ask for the full statement or a bank-certified copy, and some, such as certain mortgage lenders and visa offices, do not accept redacted statements, so ask before you redact. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Drop the statement — Redact opens on your device in Share less, with Choose rows selected
  2. Tick the transactions the recipient needs, set Show dates and Show balances, and choose Box everything else
  3. Look over every page, drag a box over anything still showing, redact, and read the Leak Check result before you send it

Questions people ask

Is the hidden text really gone?

Yes, on every page that carries a box. Redact re-renders each of those pages as a flat image with the boxes burned in, so the descriptions and amounts under them are no longer in the file: there is nothing to select, copy or search. The rest of a boxed page becomes part of the image too, so its text is no longer selectable; pages without a box are left as they were. Leak Check then runs on the redacted copy and reports anything still recoverable.

What if Bindery reads the statement wrong?

It is built to fail towards hiding. Everything in the transaction table is boxed unless it is explicitly shown, and each printed running balance is checked against the transactions before it. When a balance does not follow, or the statement prints no running balance, every line with an amount and everything between them is boxed; a page with amounts but no transactions that could be read is boxed the same way. The reasons are listed, and the redaction asks you to confirm you checked every page. The boxes are drawn on the page preview: drag to add one over anything still showing. To show more, change the ticked rows or the toggles and choose Box everything else again — the statement’s boxes are replaced and your own stay.

Does anything outside the pages give the account away?

Check the file name: the redacted copy keeps the original name with -redacted added, and a statement downloaded from online banking may carry the account number in it. Rename it before you send it. Document metadata is stripped with the redaction while Also strip document metadata is on, as it is by default.

Will the recipient accept a redacted statement?

Not always. Recipients may ask for the full statement or a bank-certified copy, and some, such as certain mortgage lenders and visa offices, do not accept redacted statements. Ask what they need before you redact. The black boxes show plainly that transactions were hidden; Bindery does not disguise that.
