The running balance is also how Bindery checks its own reading: each printed balance should follow from the transactions before it. If one does not, or the statement prints no running balance, Bindery boxes more, not less — every line with an amount, balances included, and everything between them — lists the reasons and asks you to confirm you checked every page before it redacts. Share less works on digital (text) statements; a scanned statement needs OCR first. A page without text gets no boxes from Share less: it is listed, so make it searchable with OCR first or box it yourself. After the redaction, Leak Check runs on the result and the done screen says what it found. Recipients may ask for the full statement or a bank-certified copy, and some, such as certain mortgage lenders and visa offices, do not accept redacted statements, so ask before you redact. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Drop the statement — Redact opens on your device in Share less, with Proof of funds selected
  2. Choose Box everything else: descriptions and amounts are boxed, dates and balances stay, and account numbers are masked
  3. Look over every page, drag a box over anything still showing, redact, and read the Leak Check result before you send it

Questions people ask

What does the recipient still see?

Everything outside the transaction table that carries no amount — the bank’s name, your name and address, the statement period — and, in the table, the date of each transaction and the running balance, with the opening and closing balances. Account numbers show only their last four digits; switch off Mask account numbers if the recipient needs the full number. Each transaction’s description and amount, and totals such as “Total paid out”, are hidden. Switch off Show dates or Show balances to hide those as well.

What happens when the balances do not add up?

Bindery boxes more, not less. If a printed balance does not follow from the transactions before it, or the statement prints no running balance, every line with an amount — balances included — and everything between them is boxed; if a page has amounts but no transactions could be read, the same happens on that page. The reasons are listed, and the redaction asks you to confirm you checked every page. A balance boxed this way stays boxed: if the recipient needs it, send the statement the way they ask.

Does anything outside the pages give the account away?

Check the file name: the redacted copy keeps the original name with -redacted added, and a statement downloaded from online banking may carry the account number in it. Rename it before you send it. Document metadata is stripped with the redaction while Also strip document metadata is on, as it is by default.

Will a landlord, lender or visa office accept it?

Ask first. Recipients may ask for the full statement or a bank-certified copy, and some, such as certain mortgage lenders and visa offices, do not accept redacted statements. Where a redacted copy is accepted, the black boxes show plainly that transactions were hidden; Bindery does not disguise that.
